Abstract

Many campaigners for libraries and free reading have been slow in overcoming their suspicions of digital reading and publishing; meanwhile the debate about the future of the book has been dominated by a book trade desperate to find new means to flog their old wares and package up digital chunks of text for sale. This talk argues that the shift of power relations between writer, reader and publisher brought about by the web makes us all amplified authors and collaborative readers. These changes are profound, liberating and need to be celebrated and defended.

Describing if:book's recent projects with libraries, publishing and curating the book, Chris Meade will argue that it's time to re-imagine literature and how and where we want books to happen in our lives.

About the speaker

Chris Meade is Director of if:book, the think and do tank exploring the future of the book in the digital age. A digital writer and blogger at www.bookfutures.com, he was previously CEO of Booktrust and the Poetry Society, with a track record of running imaginative and innovative literature projects.

Title: The Scene of Reading and the Literary Market Place: Some Postcolonial Reflections

Abstract

This lecture will reflect on the intimate and intricate relationship between texts and their readers in the context of colonial and postcolonial experiences. While acts of reading have often been described as ephemeral, transient and universal, they have also emerged in specific situations. In the colonial world writing was associated with modernity and the break from pre-colonial systems of thought and knowledge; it set out to produce new subjects. In the postcolonial world, the practice of reading was pegged on the production of new national subjects; it was informed by the desire for sovereignty. The lecture will try to account for the immediacy of reading in these contexts and the sets of practices that it generated: How did the worlds of texts and those of readers encounter each other in the colonial world? How have readers been imagined in colonial and postcolonial texts? What can practitioners in independent publishing learn from histories and theories of reading developed outside the metropolitan centers?

This workshop will investigate how both small and medium-sized publishers negotiate competing cultural, aesthetic, political or communicative demands placed on them and how best to support and grow a healthy eco-system for independent publishing through public and private policy initiatives. It will look at how to better grow a book culture of writers and readers. The day will be structured around three themes: networks of benefits, coalitions of value and advocacy/funding, and will address the following questions:

What partnerships and policies with local councils, education, libraries and readerships might be forged?
What policy interventions are needed (or applicable) to ensure sustainability?
How can one balance diversity and/or locality with the tendency towards homogeneity and centralization?
What framework is needed to help independent publishers position themselves in the UK and international markets?
In the face of changing technologies, how can skills development and training be implemented?
What role can publishers play in shaping the training of future publishers?
What lessons can be learnt from other industries within the creative sector?
