Building better fire investigation teams *updated*

9-10 January 2012

Critical issues in the investigation of fatal fires

8-9 December 2011
The second workshop of the Fire Investigation and Prevention programme will examine the issues around primacy of the scene and how can these be developed to ensure ‘equality of arms’ in legal disputes.



Fire scene investigation and the development of a multidisciplinary approach

The first workshop of the Fire Investigation and Prevention programme will discuss how the fire investigation community currently interacts with other stakeholder communities such as fire science and engineering.



Science City Strategies: Lessons for Scotland

Organised by the EPRC, this workshop will discuss how Scotland can better utilise its science infrastructure to support economic development, new facilities for effective commercialisation and a wider embedding of science awareness in public life and social wellbeing. Independent Publishing: Cultural policy workshop **Update**

Tuesday 23rd August, 9:30am-5pm
The third workshop of the Independent Publishing programme will investigate how both small and medium-sized publishers negotiate competing cultural, aesthetic, political or communicative demands placed on them and how best to support and grow a healthy eco-system for independent publishing through public and private policy initiatives. It will look at how to better grow a book culture of writers and readers. The day will be structured around three themes: networks of benefits, coalitions of value and advocacy/funding. Andre Schiffrin at the Edinburgh Book Festival

22 August, 6:45-7:45pm. Peppers Theatre, Edinburgh
The Independent Publishing programme is organising, in conjunction with Publishing Scotland, a talk with renowned New York publisher Andre Schiffrin during the Edinburgh Book Festival. This talk looks at the wider crisis of the media that Schiffrin says is contributing to the demise of serious journalism in newspapers. He compares the crisis in the US to the situation in Europe, and demonstrates how the American corporate model has extended its reach across the globe. Schiffrin considers a range of alternative policies that, if pursued, could safeguard the future of publishing, bookselling and the press. Book a space.
