Due to fire damage in the Insight Institute, the workshop will take place in room 5.12, Graham Hills Building, 50 George Street, Glasgow G1 1XQ. In conjunction with Scottish Enterprise, the Technology RoadMapping programme will be sharing practices with TRM practitioners from large companies and inform SMEs of TRM in this industry based workshop for the engineering sector. Discussion will focus on how SMEs can adapt TRM by reflecting on real life case studies.

The first workshop of the Technology Road Mapping programme will discuss to what extent TRM is a general tool for strategy, how TRM compares with other approaches and how it can be used as a basis for consensus as practice, particularly for SMEs. The third workshop of the Independent Publishing programme will investigate how both small and medium-sized publishers negotiate competing cultural, aesthetic, political or communicative demands placed on them and how best to support and grow a healthy eco-system for independent publishing through public and private policy initiatives. It will look at how to better grow a book culture of writers and readers. The day will be structured around three themes: networks of benefits, coalitions of value and advocacy/funding. The Independent Publishing programme is organising, in conjunction with Publishing Scotland, a talk with renowned New York publisher Andre Schiffrin during the Edinburgh Book Festival. This talk looks at the wider crisis of the media that Schiffrin says is contributing to the demise of serious journalism in newspapers. He compares the crisis in the US to the situation in Europe, and demonstrates how the American corporate model has extended its reach across the globe. Schiffrin considers a range of alternative policies that, if pursued, could safeguard the future of publishing, bookselling and the press. Book a space.

The second workshop of the Scots Law of Evidence programme will focus on the impact of emerging scientific technologies in cyber forensics or forensic anthropology on determing the reliability and validity of scientific evidence used in courts. The first workshop of the Water Management programme will draw together public, community and government stakeholders to explore what role NGOs may/should play in the emerging context of austerity-shaped water management and how government can support grassroots-informed management and link local management with national or regional objectives. Governments are vested with a deep responsibility to manage identifying information about their citizens and with implementing protection practices to safeguard this data from falling into the hands of organised crime. In this public lecture, Paul Watters (University of Ballarat) will present some UK examples of government data loss, and provide some basic guidance on how these incidents could have been prevented. Is it appropriate to use brain imaging to establish if a witness was lying when giving evidence, or, if a brain injury was preventing the accused from being criminally responsible? With the promise of more direct access to the brain than previously possible, core legal questions need urgent answers. The first workshop of the Pluralism Programme will explore the strengths and weaknesses of competing pluralist theories, concentrating in particular on recent theories which seek either to address justice and effectiveness tests from the perspective of small communities and individuals, to focus on the mechanics of systems marked by diversity, or to locate the pluralist dynamic in the encounter with difference. This two day debate, which opens the IAS Brain Imaging programme, will review and discuss the different forms of imaging, the reliability and accuracy of collected data, their application to neuromarketing as well as the legal and moral implications of imaging. Email for info.

The opening meeting of the Cybercrime programme will analyse and synthesize the context of cybercrime by looking at criminal activities, technical infrastructure and environment as well as strategies and solutions.
