The former Collins Gallery in the University of Strathclyde is now the home of the Scottish Universities Insight Institute. There is no charge for booking the conference venue. The venue can be hired by departments within the university but is not currently available to external organisations.
In order to ensure that the facility is well-managed and maintained, please read the information below before contacting us regarding a possible booking.
Facilities: The refurbished space offers groups of up to 120 participants the opportunity to meet in an area specifically designed with the aim of promoting the Institute’s purpose of Knowledge Exchange. The venue, with its flexible floor space, is an excellent facility for hosting conferences and seminars.
The venue offers a reception/welcome area, a presentation space for plugging in a laptop, a projector, breakout areas for smaller group discussion, a cloakroom, and a catering/servery table. The venue can be variously configured using the furniture available – 50 double desks and 120 chairs. The space is fully disabled-friendly with wheel-chair access from Richmond Street, disabled parking across from the main entrance, and disabled toilet facilities.
Set Up: You are advised to allow sufficient time and assistance to configure the room to a layout which best suits your event. The default setup of the room is cabaret style, with ten tables and six chairs at each table. You may need to book Portering Services in advance to assist with the setup/de-rigging should you need to alter the default setting. At the end of your event, please leave the venue in the default layout.
Staffing: Please ensure that you have someone on hand before the start of the event to welcome your guests as they arrive and to be there for late comers. There must be at least one member of Strathclyde University staff in attendance throughout the duration of the event. If the person who books the space is unable to attend, please advise the Insight Institute of the staff member who will be in attendance.
Please also ensure that everyone has left the area at the specified finish time before you vacate the building.
Catering: If you require catering for your seminar or meeting, please send an email to the Nourish Team at email@example.com or visit the webpage at www.strath.ac.uk/nourish-catering/ to arrange menus, delivery/uplift, and internal payment. During the academic year, the venue is in almost constant use, sometimes by more than one group on any one day. In order to ensure that crockery and food are not left between or after events, all catering must be staffed and drop offs are not permitted.
Access: The main access door to the conference area is set in a locked position and can only be unlocked by pressing the green button to the right of the door when inside the venue. Please contact Security regarding the de-activation of the locking system during your event.
Security: Hirers of the venue must ensure that Security Services know in advance of all bookings. Please make arrangements for entry to and exit from the building. As a hirer, it is your responsibility to ensure the building is left securely locked.
I.T.: If you intend using the venue's IT facilities, please bring your own laptop which can be plugged into the main IT desk. An overhead projector is available and projection is onto a whitewashed wall next to the desk. A touch screen on the desk will link your laptop with the projector. If you require assistance with IT equipment, please contact the University's IT Services. WiFi access is available via the Cloud and Eduroam.
Lighting: The space is divided into two lighting zones. These are controlled by panels on the walls above which are notes on how to alter the lighting levels in each area.
Heating: Controls are not located in the building. Any alteration to the temperature of the room can only be made by contacting the Estates Management Helpdesk on extension 2164.
Fire Safety: There are two entrance/exits into the main conference area: the door into the Collins Building and the Disabled entrance, both of which are on Richmond Street. Within the main area, there is also an exit via a store to the rear of the building which should only be used in an emergency.
Please ensure that someone is on hand at the start of your event to make delegates aware of how to exit the building in the event of an emergency. The fire alarm in the building is normally tested sometime during a Friday morning. If the alarm rings outwith this period, please ensure that your delegates are directed out of the building and congregate on Richmond Street.

If the venue is available and your event is considered an appropriate use of the space, you will be advised of the procedure for making a formal booking and the terms of usage.
