What we do

The Scottish Universities Insight Institute promotes collaboration and engagement between researchers and wider society.

Our objective is to help members of wider communities- in the public sector, business and the third sector –gain new insights into issues with which they deal and to be better informed in the decisions they take. In doing so, we provide universities with pathways to impact for their research.

Programmes of Knowledge Exchange

The Institute hosts Knowledge Exchange activity led by our partner universities. As part of this we support programmes that address and inform important issues facing Scotland and the wider world, and which do so by drawing in wide-ranging research knowledge from Scotland’s top research-led universities and their international academic collaborators together with wider multi-sector perspectives.

Our aim is to mobilise existing knowledge through a collaborative focus on shared issues or problems. We do not fund primary research but rather aim, through deploying knowledge in fresh ways, to get added value and impact from excellent research in which society has already invested.

Our outputs include: new networks and communities of practice linking academia to the wider community; short reports for policy makers, businesses and the third sector; and new research collaborations which will build on newly uncovered policy and practice questions.

A resource for Scotland but with wider reach and impact

The wider international participation which we promote informs thinking, helps benchmark the Scottish research, policy and business environment, and builds Scotland’s reputation for innovative approaches to addressing societal challenges.

Impact on policy and practice

In 2016 we ran a programme aimed at increasing the impact of SUII programmes on public policy and practice. The report highlights the lessons from previous programmes which will help to inform the design and delivery of future SUII-type projects.

Evaluation Report

An evaluation of SUII programmes funded between 2011-2013 was carried out in 2014 to highlight some of the key outcomes and outputs. Download the summary here.

A report providing an overview of the scope and impact of activities from programmes supported by the Institute during its pilot phase is available here.
